Kenneth Ferrie has stormed into a five-stroke lead on day three of the Dunhill Links Championship after Colin Montgomerie stuttered to a 73.

Ferrie carded a five-under 67 at St Andrew's to move to 13-under over, dropping the man he defeated to win the European Open in July to second place.

Montgomerie failed to repeat his day-two 65 as he swapped St Andrew's for the Kingsbarns course.

He was joined in a share for second by Henrik Stenson and Ricardo Gonzalez.

Stenson, who impressed with a 65 - the best round of the day - described it as a "very difficult day".

Players were heavily affected by strong winds down the east coast of Scotland, which led to balls being blown either closer or further away from the hole.

Montgomerie, who was embroiled in controversy for moving a ball in a tournament in Indonesia in March, was once again in lengthy discussions with match officials.

As he attempted to putt from 25 feet away from the flag at the 15th, he stepped back as he could see the ball moving. Seconds later it rolled to within eight feet of the hole.

He immediately called for a referee, who allowed him to play the ball as it lay.

"I was pretty confident I had done nothing wrong but called the rules official and he told me it was OK," said Montgomerie.

"Then I wasn't concentrating on what I was doing and missed the putt."
