Ernie Els says he is recovering ahead of schedule as he battles to return to competitive golf after undergoing knee surgery earlier this summer. "It's now exactly six weeks post-op and we're really stepping things up in terms of my physio and the exercises I'm allowed to do," said Els.
"It's reached the point now where I can swing a golf club, which I'm told is pretty impressive at this stage."
Els has been sidelined since twisting his knee on a sailing holiday in July.
If all goes to plan, the 35-year-old who has won the South African Open three times, will be in the field for this year's event from 15-18 December.
Three-times major winner Els said his recovery from injury was going better than expected.
There's obviously a long way to go before my knee is properly recovered," Els told his official website.
"But knowing we've got to the stage where we're gearing everything towards my golf swing feels like the next big hurdle has been jumped.
"It makes me feel like I'm that bit closer to being able to play golf again."
