Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke had mixed fortunes before finishing with a level-par opening round in the South African Open in Durban.

Starting on the back nine, Clarke bogeyed the 10th before registering three birdies between the 13th and 16th to go to the turn at two under.

However, three bogies on the back nine meant he finished with a 72.

South African Titch Moore shares the lead with American Bruce Vaughan at seven under par.

Another South African Tjaart Van der Walt is a further shot back on six under par.

Starting his 25th year on the tour, Leicestershire's Malcolm Mackenzie finished his first round in a tie for fourth place with a four-under par 68.

The 44-year-old from Barrow-upon-Soar is playing on a medical exemption after undergoing shoulder surgery at the end of 2003.

Another Englishman on four under is Chris Williams.

Trevor Immelman opened the defence of his title with a two under par 70. The South African is chasing a hat-trick of victories in this event.
