Japan's Shigeki Maruyama fired a hole-in-one as he retained the Sony Open lead with one round left.

Maruyama shot a 68 to reach 10 under, one shot ahead of American Brett Quigley with countryman Paul Azinger on eight under in Honolulu.

England's Justin Rose slumped from second to eighth on five under after a two-over 70, while compatriot Luke Donald (65) surged to four under.

World number one Vijay Singh was on six under with Ernie Els four behind.

Maruyama relinquished his overnight lead with a double-bogey at the first hole but hit back with a six-iron ace at the par-three fourth at the Waialae Country Club.

"It was a really bad start," Maruyama said. "I tried to think positive things. Fortunately, I had a hole-in-one. That really saved my game. I could think positive after that."

Rose, who had amassed 11 birdies in his first two rounds, could only pick up one shot, at the par-five 18th, and dropped shots at the 6th, 13th and short 17th to slip down the leaderboard.

Singh, the winner of nine events and more than $10m in prize money last year, began the day five strokes off the lead but battled back into contention with a three-under 67.
