Els has been out of form at the US Open at Pinehurst |
Ernie Els is considering missing next month's Scottish Open at Loch Lomond in order to tune up for the Open at St Andrews the following week. The world number three has had a poor US Open and may extend his break prior to the Open, which starts on 14 July.
He may warm up for the Old Course by playing some links golf, possibly at Royal Dornoch, north of Inverness.
Els said: "I've not decided yet, but I need a good break. I love the Scottish, but we will see how it goes."
Els, second to Tiger Woods in the 2000 Open at St Andrews, won at Loch Lomond the previous week that year and was champion there again in 2003.
The South African was withering about his play at Pinehurst, where he is 12 shots behind leader Retief Goosen.
He described his double bogeys at the 10th and 13th as "brain dead stuff".
