Ireland's Padraig Harrington missed the US Open cut by three shots at Pinehurst after adding a 74 to his first-round 77 and finishing on 11 over par. Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez also misses the weekend after a bogey-ridden 74 and a 13-over-par total.
English debutant Simon Dyson crashed out after finishing on 17 over, as did Scotland's Stephen Gallacher who ended his tournament on 11 over par.
Swedish qualifier Carl Pettersson was also 13 over at the end of day two.
Fellow Swedes Peter Hanson and Robert Karlsson missed out by one stroke.
Ryder Cup star Harrington said: "I'm not overly disappointed. That's the way it goes sometimes. Obviously it was not going to be my week.
"I was in the rough eight times (off the tee) and on seven of those I couldn't make the green. That's a lot of shots to make up and I didn't putt particularly well."
However, the European contingent were not the only ones to struggle as Pinehurst continued to provide a formidable challenge on day two.
Open champion Todd Hamilton also missed out by one shot, while 2003 Open winner Ben Curtis finished on 16 over.
Former US Open champion David Duval (12 over) and former USPGA winners Shaun Micheel (12 over) and Rich Beem (14 over) are also on their way home.
