Singh won more than $10m |
Vijay Singh has been named PGA Tour player of the year for the first time. The Fijian ended Tiger Woods' five-year monopoly on the title after a brilliant season during which he also took the American's world number one ranking.
Singh won nine tournaments in total, including his career third major at the USPGA Championship and became the first player to win $10m (5.5m) in a year.
Open champion Todd Hamilton was named rookie of the year following his wins at Troon and in the Honda Classic.
"This whole year has been great for me," Singh said at the end of the season.
"You don't really wake up one day and think you're going to be able to play like I did this year.
"There's a build-up to it. You win one and then you win another one. You feel more comfortable and more confident, and it snowballs.
"You can't wait to get to the next hole and play better. That's how it's been."
Singh, whose work ethic is unparalleled in the modern game, also reigned supreme in scoring average, his mean of 68.84 shots per round earning him the Vardon Trophy.
British Open champion Todd Hamilton was voted PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. The 39-year-old American who spent a dozen years on the Asian tours until earning his PGA Tour card, won the Honda Classic, then beat Els in a four-hole play-off at Royal Troon.
John Daly, whose victory at the Buick Invitational was his first on US soil in 10 years, was voted PGA Tour Comeback Player of the Year. Craig Stadler was Champions Tour Player of the Year, while Ireland's Mark McNulty was the Champions Rookie of the Year, and Hubert Green was the comeback player of the year after returning from cancer.
