Tiger Woods matched his best score of the year with a six-under-par 64 to lie three shots back at the halfway stage of the Tour Championship on Friday. The Georgia event is led by 50-year-old American veteran Jay Haas, whose 66 gave him a two-round total of 133, two better than Stephen Ames.
"Any time I lead is a great feeling at 20, 30, 40 or 50, but it's way too early to get too excited" said Haas.
Joint first-round leader Darren Clarke slipped back with a disappointing 73.
Winless for eight months, Woods made two birdies with great recovery shots, and was please with his bogey-free round.
"I played myself right back into the tournament," he said.
"If I play my best, I'm pretty tough to beat - I'd like to play my best more frequently."
US Open champion Retief Goosen joined Woods at four-under overall following a 66.
But Vijay Singh has some catching up to do if he wants to end the year with 10 wins.
The 41-year-old Fijian took 35 putts on a cool, breezy afternoon and shot 73, ending his streak of 14 rounds at par or better.
