Paul Casey swept into a three-shot lead at the end of the third round of the Wales Open at Celtic Manor. Casey finished at 19-under after his round of 65, to move ahead of overnight leader Simon Khan.
Khan was unable to repeat his astounding second round of 61, but a 70 was enough to keep him clear of South Africa's James Kingston in third.
Colin Montgomerie continued his encouraging return to form by holding on to a share of fourth.
Casey began the third round two shots adrift of Khan, but drew level by the second hole and was two shots clear by the fifth.
But the 26-year-old had his seven birdies and an eagle slightly spoiled by consecutive bogeys at the 12th and 13th holes.
"I probably would have settled for a 65 at the start of the day but the way it panned out I feel like I left a few shots out there," said Casey.
"But my game is in good shape and I'm looking forward to Sunday.
"It was important to stay focused which I was very happy about." A Casey victory on Sunday would all but guarantee him a place in Europe's Ryder Cup team for the first time. He is in the 10th and final automatic qualifying position for the September event but a win would see him move up to sixth.
"I'm not going to worry about that," he said.
"My attitude has been poor the last month or so so I am working more on attitude than worrying about scoring."
Montgomerie birdied the final hole to sneak into fourth - along with John Bickerton and Philip Golding - after a double bogey at the 15th looked to have cost him a place near the top of the leaderboard.
"I will take a 69 - if 69 is the worst of the week it can't be that bad," said Montgomerie.
"It's just got to click in but I don't know when that will happen so no-one else does. It's not lighting up the world but it's OK."
Bickerton's 63 was the lowest round of the day, and represented a major boost after he missed six consecutive cuts earlier in the season.
"It's my first decent round for a while," said Bickerton.
