Britons chase leaders in Madrid
FIRST-ROUND LEADERBOARD

-4 JM Arruti (Spa), P Broadhurst (Eng), B Davis (Eng), B Dredge (Wal), D Fichardt (SA), P Fowler (Aus), T Immelman (SA), N O'Hern (Aus)
Switzerland's Julien Clement held a two-shot lead at seven under after the first round of the Madrid Open.

Clement fired a 64 to lead Australian Terry Price and Sweden's Johan Edfors, with English pair Paul Broadhurst and Brian Davis in a group one shot back.

Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie was three under and Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez was one under.

Former Ryder Cup star Peter Baker, 121st on the Order of Merit, shot 73. The top 115 retain their Tour cards.

England's Simon Wakefield, 116th in the rankings, carded 70 as he attempted to preserve his playing rights for next year.

South African Trevor Immelman is also on four under, 24 hours after being hospitalized after suffering a reaction to a wasp sting.

It's just a pleasure to have a good round - I've had a very bad season
Julien Clement

Immelman's ears closed up with swelling and he had a feeling of pins and needles all over his body.

"It was scary for a while - in the ambulance they kept asking if I could breathe," said the 24-year-old.

"They were worried that my tongue would start swelling, but it never reached that thank goodness and I was released after about 90 minutes.

"It was very nerve-wracking, though, because for a while I didn't know what was going on and none of the doctors spoke English.

"They were pretty concerned about me, I think. I had a sting in Sweden last year and my arm swelled up so badly that I couldn't get a glove on. Apparently there's some medication I need to carry around with me."

Clement, 23, has not earned a single penny since July, missing eight straight halfway cuts. He has slumped to 174th on the money list and needs to finish first or second to avoid a return to the qualifying school.

"I'm not thinking about it for the moment," he said. "Maybe on the 17th hole on Sunday I will. It's just a pleasure to have a good round - I've had a very bad season."
