Three birdies in the last three holes helped American Kirk Triplett claim a two-shot lead after the first round of the Wachovia Championship in Charlotte. The run gave Triplett a course record eight-under-par 64 to put him ahead of Fredrik Jacobson, Stuart Appleby, Rory Sabbatini and Brett Quigley.
England's Luke Donald is three shots off the lead after a round of 67 which included just one bogey.
Tiger Woods, on his return after a three-week break, fired a 69.
The world number one, who had three birdies in a bogey-free round, struggled off the tee and hit only four out of 14 fairways.
"I only hit two really bad tee shots. The others were just a little bit overdrawn or a little bit overcut. I was over-shaping the shots," he said.
"It is a very easy fix, I can go on the practice range here and fix it real quick. I am pretty excited about the second round."
In-form Fijian Vijay Singh, who has won the last two events, carded a 68 while US Masters champion Phil Mickelson recorded a 70.
Triplett has won twice on the USPGA tour with his last victory coming last year at the Reno Tahoe Open.
The 42-year-old, who birdied six of his last eight holes, said: "It just kind of felt like my day towards the end.
"I had hit a number of good shots and was playing nice golf. I birdied two and that got some momentum, those were my 11th and 12th holes.
"I know I can put up the numbers that are necessary for me to make a living out here.
"I just know deep down inside that even if I hit some bad shots, play some bad rounds, have a bad stretch, I know it's in there, that I know how to do it."
