Toms v Montgomerie (Europe won 1 up) Colin Montgomerie had the honour of being the man to clinch Europe's Ryder Cup triumph at Oakland Hills. One up on the 18th tee, Lee Westwood's victory just minutes earlier ensured Europe's talisman could march up the last with their destiny in his hands.
He duly obliged, visibly taking in the moment as he reached the green to 'Monty, Monty' cheers from the crowd.
And he kept cool to roll in a tricky final putt that sealed a one-hole victory over the battling David Toms.
Montgomerie shrugged off the personal achievement after his winning Ryder Cup putt.
The Scot, who has struggled through divorce in a difficult year, said: "Personally it means nothing. It's all about a team event.
"That putt was not for me - it was to get 14 points for the team."
Montgomerie hailed his colleagues who were rated underdogs by many pundits before the event.
"We are one of the closest-knit teams in international sport. It's amazing how we play for each other," he said.
