He duly obliged, visibly taking in the moment as he reached the green to 'Monty, Monty' cheers from the crowd.
And he kept cool to roll in a tricky final putt that sealed a one-hole victory over the battling David Toms.
Montgomerie shrugged off the personal achievement after his winning Ryder Cup putt.
The Scot, who has struggled through divorce in a difficult year, said: "Personally it means nothing. It's all about a team event.
"That putt was not for me - it was to get 14� points for the team."
Montgomerie hailed his colleagues who were rated underdogs by many pundits before the event.
"We are one of the closest-knit teams in international sport. It's amazing how we play for each other," he said.
