Love/Woods v Harrington/McGinley
(USA won 4&3) Irish duo Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley profited from a host of errors to beat Tiger Woods and Davis Love 4&3 in the Ryder Cup foursomes on Saturday. Harrington drove into the trees at the first as the big-hitting American pair bagged an early two-hole advantage.
The Europeans reduced it at the fifth and then found themselves two up after Woods missed putts on the eighth and ninth and scuffed a chip on the 11th.
Two soon became three and the match was all over when Woods missed on the 15th.
Harrington, the highest ranked player in the European team, said a change of tactics helped the duo turn the match their way.
"We didn't start very well and didn't take our opportunities, but Paul had a word and said we had to forget who we were playing against.
"We had to concentrate on getting under par for the round and we started playing better and we were relentless."
McGinley, who sank the putt that won the Ryder Cup at the Belfry two years ago, was elated after securing his first victory in five matches.
"We played really well. Padraig is my dream partner and we had a great day. It's a proud day for Ireland and for Europe," said the 38-year-old.
Woods was bitterly disappointed with the way he played.
He said: "I basically missed some putts, hit a couple of bad shots and basically put us in a very difficult position to try and win a match.
"Davis played fine. I just did not play well this afternoon.
"I played well in the first three matches, and this afternoon, I just didn't have it. It was just not a good time to have that happen."
