Perry/Cink v Garcia/Donald
(Europe won 2&1) Europe's Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald secured a 2&1 victory over Kenny Perry and Stewart Cink in the foursomes. The Spanish maestro, a veteran of two Cups at the tender age of 24, helped his rookie team-mate settle quickly.
After winning the first hole, the duo had surged three up after 12 before the Americans managed to cut the lead back to one to set up a tense finale.
But Garcia calmly sank an eight-footer on the 15th to put Europe two up again and the Americans could not respond.
It was Garcia's second victory of the day following his success with Lee Westwood in the morning fourballs, while it was 26-year-old Donald's first ever triumph in the event.
The Spaniard was quick to warn his European team-mates against complacency after seeing the side surge into a best-ever 6-1 opening-day lead. "This is only the beginning. This is only the first day and we need to play this way on Saturday," said Garcia.
"We have to put ourselves in a good position going into the singles. We have to realise it's not finished."
Donald, who took a half in the morning fourballs alongside Paul McGinley was happy with his first win, saying: "It was fun but I am tired and need to get some rest."
