Europe comeback stuns stars
Woods/Mickelson v Clarke/Westwood
(Europe won 1 up)

Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke
Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood came from three behind for a 1-up win over top US pair Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods in the Ryder Cup foursomes.

Woods and Mickelson, stung by their earlier fourball defeat, stormed three ahead after four holes.

But they lost four out of six to let the Europeans sneak ahead after 11.

The Americans drew level at the 17th, but a wild Mickelson drive led the US to a six on the par four final hole as Europe took victory with a bogey.

Mickelson's tee shot had finished up against a fence and forced Woods to take a penalty drop.

World number two Woods punched the ball up the fairway, but Mickelson's approach span back 20ft from the flag and Woods missed for bogey.

It was the American pairing's second defeat of the day - and the third Ryder Cup in a row Woods has lost both matches on the opening day.

Mickelson was the only one of the illustrious duo to talk to the media at the end of the day.

"I let it slide on 18 with a poor tee shot after we'd pulled even and it basically cost us the match.

"So it's been a very disappointing day for me. I've played and fought hard but have been coming up short and not playing the way I would like to," he said, before being hastily driven back to the team's hotel.

In contract the European pair of Westwood and Clarke, both winning their second match, stayed calm to overcome their opponents.

Englishman Westwood, ranked 41 in the world said: "To come back from three down is a massive achievement. We just stuck in there and played some quality shots."

Clarke, of Northern Ireland, added: "We didn't panic at any stage. We didn't play our best, but did what we had to do."
