Love III/Campbell v Clarke/Jimenez
(Europe won 5&4) Darren Clarke and Miguel Angel Jimenez secured Europe's first victory in their Ryder Cup defence by crushing American duo Davis Love and Chad Campbell 5&4. Jimenez won the second and the ninth holes of their fourballs match, while Clarke calmly fired successive birdies to put Europe four up at the turn.
The Americans had no answer to the onslaught and Jimenez raised his putter in celebration after winning the 11th.
The inspired European pair went on to clinch their victory at the 14th hole.
Clarke, playing in his fourth Ryder Cup, said good early putts were the key to their emphatic victory.
"It's been a long week building up to the start and we were all really excited to get out there and play. "I made a couple of good putts - momentum is so important in the Ryder Cup - and we just kept going," he said.
"It's the Ryder Cup - the biggest event we play - you have to go out there and have fun," added the 36-year-old Northern Irishman.
