Open scorers face shake-up
Mark Roe
Roe was a dejected figure after his controversial exit last year
Card-signing procedures at the Open will be changed to prevent a repeat of the situation which saw Mark Roe disqualified at Sandwich in 2003.

Roe was two shots off the lead after a third-round 67 but he had not swapped cards with partner Jesper Parnevik.

The Royal and Ancient, the game's ruling body, will now provide scorers and the system will also use computers.

"It's unfair to subject members of the home club to players letting off steam," said the R&A's David Pepper.

The players' names will be in bigger print on the card and the recording team will be cut from five to two, with scores also being projected onto a wall to make checking easier.

Peter Dawson, R&A chief executive, said: "In our discussions with the European Tour we came to the conclusion that what happened could easily have happened on the Tour - and did to Padraig Harrington."

Europe's leading player in the world rankings was disqualified when five clear with a round to play in the 2000 Benson and Hedges International Open at The Belfry after the discovery that he had not signed his first-round scorecard.

England's Roe, 41, whose best finish in the Open was tied 16th in 1990, will have to come through the qualifying tournament at Sunningdale on 28 June, unless he wins an exemption in the meantime.

Exemption mix-up

This is the first time that international qualifying competitions have been introduced around the world, and Dawson regretted not personally informing some leading players that they had lost previously earned exemptions.

Only the last five US Open champions and the last three Volvo PGA champions, for example, are through to Troon rather than 10 and five as in previous years.

"I have to be honest," said Dawson. "We did not get in touch with those players who had lost exemptions and we should have done.

"We were working with the European and US Tours on this and we assumed they were in touch with the players."
