Mickelson defends switch
Phil Mickelson
Masters champion Phil Mickelson has defended his decision to switch equipment just weeks ahead of the 2004 Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills.

The timing of the move has led many to question his commitment to the US cause, but Mickelson is unrepentant.

"I felt it was in my best interests and the best interests of the team that I do this now," said the American.

Mickelson is making the switch in a deal said to be one of the richest golf sponsorships ever.

"Why should they question my commitment, I've been looking forward to this event for a long time," added Mickelson.

"For me to play my best I need to be excited about what I have. I am and think this will ultimately be the best for the team."

Mickelson finished well down the field at last week's Canadian Open after struggling to come to terms with the new woods and balls.
