Haeggman played in the 1993 Ryder Cup |
Joakim Haeggman said he has not given up hope of playing in this year's Ryder Cup, despite already being named assistant to captain Bernhard Langer. The Swede won the Qatar Masters earlier this year and is currently 16th on the European Ryder Cup points list.
A win in this week's Spanish Open on the Canary island of Fuerteventura will increase his hopes of a team place.
"If I can win one of the big events - the Deutsche Bank, European Open - I have every chance," said Haeggman.
Haeggman, who was also assistant to Sam Torrance in the 2002 Ryder Cup, has also revealed the lengths he is prepared to go to for the European team.
"Whatever the players want, you do. If they want a clean pair of socks, you get it, if they want a 3-wood or tickets for their wives, that is what you do because you have to keep them happy to let them focus on the game.
"I said to Thomas Bjorn at The Belfry if you want me to clean your shoes for you then today is the day, you can forget it the rest of the year. Anything Bernhard asks me, I will do."
Fellow Swede Anders Forsbrand will serve as Langer's vice-captain for the bi-annual match between the top 12 players from Europe and America, which will take place at Oakland Hills.
