Argentine Ricardo Gonzalez has won the Madrid Open after a stunning fightback from six shots off the lead.

Gonzalez produced a final-round 65 to win by one shot from Paul Casey, Padraig Harrington, Nick O'Hern and Marten Olander.

Britain's Casey was the overnight leader by four shots, but saw his advantage disappear on the front nine.

It was Gonzalez's second career victory on the European Tour following his success in the 2001 European Masters.

Not many people would have put money on the Argentine winning the title, after he endured a nightmare start in the final round.

But a remarkable run including four birdies after the fourth and then four birdies in five holes from the 11th helped him achieve the improbable.

"After three-putting the second I thought the tournament was over," he said after pocketing the 162,288 first prize.

"I was seven behind and the will had left me. I didn't have any motivation but then I started to play well, the door was opened and the light switched on for me."

But as good as it was for Gonzalez, it was equally bad for Casey.

His four-shot lead disappeared when he took three bogeys in five holes from the seventh. The Briton was the only player in the top 19 to finish his round over par.

Harrington enjoyed a similar charge to that of Gonzalez, but his challenge fizzled out towards the end.

The Irishman's second-place was the 20th of his professional career.

Earlier, Britons Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood both pulled out after picking up injuries.
