Lyle has played in five Ryder Cups |
Sandy Lyle says he wants to succeed Sam Torrance as European Ryder Cup captain. Ian Woosnam, the 2002 vice-captain, is favourite for the role after Bernhard Langer admitted to having second thoughts about applying.
But any chance of Woosnam being elected unopposed now appears to have gone after Lyle declared his intention to stand for the post.
The 44-year-old Scot, who played in five Ryder Cups between 1979 and 1987, told the Sunday Express newspaper: "I don't want to be an old captain who's 55.
"The trend recently has been for a captain who has been fairly well in with his players on tour, and that's a vital part of it.
"I've been out of the limelight for so many years that people have probably forgotten there's a quality name out there who could do the job.
"So I've put my name forward into the stewing pot and am watching to see what happens."
