Britain and Ireland won their first ever Seve Trophy at Druids Glen on Sunday.

Colin Montgomerie's team avenged a one-point loss in the inaugural match in 2000 by beating Continental Europe 14.5-11.5.

They won despite a miserable day for captain Montgomerie, who lost to Ballesteros at the final hole.

Two years ago an inspired Ballesteros beat Montgomerie to help his side secure victory.

The Spaniard had the upper hand again in his personal battle, but finished on the losing side after his team failed to claw back the four-point deficit over night.

Seve's team were second best this time

"Our goal was 13.5 points and that was achieved. It's a happy occasion for the team and myself," Montgomerie said afterwards.

Ballesteros remained unbeaten during the tournament, having won his only other game when paired with Jose Maria Olazabal in Saturday's fourballs.

They were six-under-par for the last eight holes against Ireland's Paul McGinley and Padraig Harrington and Ballesteros won it by holing a 60-foot bunker shot at the short 17th.

Continental Europe went into the day trailing 10-6 after the first two days, and they found it too much of a gap to close.

Harrington and McGinley both won their individual matches on Sunday to make it four points each over the three days.

The match between Harrington and Olazabal - fifth and fourth respectively in the Masters at Augusta last week - proved to be a bit of a disappointment.

Big win

Olazabal had four bogeys in the first seven holes and Harrington was too solid after that as he strolled to a 3&2 win.

Darren Clarke beat Thomas Bjorn 4&3 to complete a good week for the Irish contingent, and England's Lee Westwood overcame Raphael Jacquelin of France 3&2.

Andrew Oldcorn picked up half a point after finishing tied with Sweden's Niclas Fasth.

Germany's Alex Cejka was the biggest winner of the day, thumping Ian Woosnam of Wales 5&4.
