![]() | Tuesday, 18 December, 2001, 08:47 GMT Walker Cup winners honoured ![]() Peter McEvoy congratulates Marc Warren at Sea Island Great Britain and Ireland's Walker Cup team beat world number one Annika Sorenstam into second place for the Golf Writers' Trophy for 2001. Captain Peter McEvoy led GB & Ireland to victory in America for only the second time in history. They fought back from a point down after the first day to win 15-9 at Sea Island in Georgia in August, completing a first-ever successful defence of the trophy.
Nearly 60% of votes cast by members of the Association of Golf Writers went to McEvoy's team, and he described the achievement as "fantastic". "Put yourself back 20 years and you would not be able to believe what has been achieved since then," added McEvoy. "It was the worst possible conditions for us to win, yet we did it easily and that is to the enormous credit of the players." Sorenstam had an incredible season, topping the American tour with eight victories and becoming the first woman to break 60 in an official event. The Swede shot 59 during the Standard Register Ping tournament in Phoenix in March on her way to claiming the trophy. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Golf stories: Links to more Golf stories are at the foot of the page. | |||
