Forsyth forced to school
Alastair Forsyth in action
Alastair Forsyth finished just outside the top 115
Alastair Forsyth will play the European Tour's qualifying school next week, despite his challenge against the decision not to renew his tour card automatically.

His manager's appeal to the tournament committee will not be heard until 5 December.

The uncertainty over the outcome means that the 25-year-old Scot cannot afford to miss the qualifying school finals at The San Roque Club and Real Club de Golf in Sotogrande.

This latest development in the Forsyth saga followed a meeting between the player's management team and the European Tour's executive director Ken Schofield and director of operations David Garland during the second round of the Volvo Masters.

Garland said: "We had a very amicable discussion with Ian Doyle and Brian Marchbank and the viewpoints of both sides were aired.

Sergio Garcia in action at Loch Lomond
Garcia has not played 11 European events
"Ian has stated his intention to appeal to the tournament committee, which is scheduled to meet on 5 December and the matter will be considered on that date."

Forsyth, European rookie of the year in 1999, finished 116th in the Order of Merit after last week's Italian Open in Sardinia and only the top 115 players will earn a tour card for 2002.

But his manager said the European Tour had been "unfair" in giving Sergio Garcia one of those 115 spots when the Spaniard only played 10 tour events this season.

That is one less than the minimum required to retain playing privileges on the circuit.

The European Tour maintains that Garcia committed to play in 11 events.

It credited him with 'playing' in the American Express Championship in St Louis, which was subsequently cancelled following the attacks on the United States on 11 September.
