Canadian Mike Weir hit a birdie on the first hole of a four-man play-off to win the Tour Championship.

Minutes after bogeying the par-four 18th the first time, Weir made amends by running in a seven-foot putt at the same hole to win at the Champions Club, Houston.

He shot a final round three-under-par 68 to finish level with American David Toms, Spain's Sergio Garcia and South African Ernie Els.

They all finished at 14-under 270, one stroke ahead of third-round leader Scott Verplank and fellow American Kenny Perry.

Tiger Woods, who played with the pain of a sore back all weekend, finished six strokes off the pace.

However, Woods was still able to secure the money title for the fourth time in five years, as well as the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average.

But it was Weir who stole the show at the last official event of the PGA Tour.

"I haven't been playing as well as I would like, but my putter and scrambling ability held me together," said Weir.

Weir collected $900,000, about 615,000, for his third PGA Tour victory.

Weir began the play-off with a perfect drive.

But he had to wait about 10 minutes while Els and Garcia tried to hit recovery shots over the trees right of the fairway.

Els successfully found the green to finish on par but Garcia could not recover and had to settle for a bogey.

Toms drove on the fairway but overshot the hole with his second shot, meaning he had to settle for par.

Weir's second shot landed just beyond the pin but he was able to hold his nerve to claim victory.
