![]() | Sunday, 4 November, 2001, 15:50 GMT Havret wins Italian Open ![]() Havret is congratulated by his caddie on the 18th green Gregory Havret has won his first Tour title at the Italian Open. The French rookie had a final-round 69 to collect the first prize of 103,000 at Is Molas in Sardinia. The 24-year-old, who began the last round one stroke behind overnight leader Sven Struver, finished on 20-under-par, one shot clear of Welshman Bradley Dredge in second. Mark Roe, defending champion Ian Poulter, Diego Borrego and Shaun Webster were a shot further adrift in third. Poulter's round of 67 included a hole-in-one at the 14th, his second of the season. Roe's finish meant he kept his European Tour card but Webster just missed out and will have to go back to qualifying school. Struver, who led by one shot at the 1st tee, saw his challenge disappear with a final-round 76. Runner-up Dredge hit a 69 to ensure that Havret was not certain of victory until the last hole. The Welshman began with an eagle at the 1st hole but it was cancelled out by a double bogey at the 5th. He kept up the pressure but Havret held his nerve well to become the first Frenchman to win the event. Leading final scores 268 G Havret (Fr) 65 66 68 69 |
