![]() | Friday, 28 September, 2001, 15:51 GMT 16:51 UK Woosie plays waiting game ![]() Celtic Manor beat off fierce opposition from Scotland Ian Woosnam has said he would like to wait to captain Europe in the Ryder Cup after it was announced on Friday that Wales' Celtic Manor will host the 2010 competition. The 43-year-old Welshman is European vice-captain for the 34th Ryder Cup, which has been postponed until next year because of the terrorist attacks in America. Traditionally Woosnam would have been favourite to take over the reins from current skipper Sam Torrance for the 2004 competition at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. But Woosnam will try and persuade the Ryder Cup committee to allow him to skip his "turn".
"It would top my career off by captaining the Ryder Cup in Wales for the very first time." Just as excited as Woosnam at the news of Celtic Manor's successful bid was compatriot Phillip Price, who had qualified for the European team before its postponement. "It is absolutely vital that the Ryder Cup came to Wales," Price said. "Wales had become the poor relation of all the home nations in terms of golf development. "England, Scotland and Ireland have all developed well, while Wales has been left behind. But hopefully this will bring us back in line." He gave credit to Celtic Manor owner Sir Terry Matthews for the financial backing the billionaire had given the Welsh bid, as well as the work that has gone into resculpting the Wentwood Hills course.
"To be honest, I was surprised it came to Wales. Because of the heritage of golf in Scotland, I thought the event would have gone there. "But I think the criteria for the bid was golf development, and Wales certainly does need to be developed. "This will create more interest in the game. It's a big tournament and all the best players in the world will be around. Hopefully, we'll see some good players coming through as a result." While Woosnam has hopes of captaining the 2010 team, Price has a different idea about his favoured involvement: "It's a long way off, but hopefully I'll still be around by then. If I can make the side, I'm sure the support will be fantastic." | Other top Golf stories: Links to more Golf stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||
