Ryder Cup delay made with heavy heart
The 18th hole at the Belfry
The Belfry should lose little from the postponement
BBC Golf correspondent Tony Adamson says it was "absolutely the right decision" to postpone this year's Ryder Cup.

After such a terrible tragedy there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that the right move was to postpone this month's event at the Belfry.

What surprised me however, was the fact it took six days to come to that decision.

It is because the players hold the Cup very dear and they love playing in it.

The USPGA also wanted it to go ahead but as the days have gone on and the extent of this terrible tragedy came clear it became likely that the Cup would be postponed.

I'm quite sure that the decision was made with a heavy heart however.

This year's Cup was going to be a huge event, probably the most eagerly awaited yet, but I have no doubt that they have made the right move in putting it off a year.

The European team are obviously very disappointed but they acknowledge that if they were in America's shoes they would not have wanted to play it.

It would have been a surreal contest had it happened because neither side would have had their hearts in it.

No one would have had the appetite to compete and therefore the passion and excitement of the whole competition would have been lost.

It would have been a very artificial competition.

And by calling it off for a year but keeping the same format they have also ensured that there are no great losses for those involved in organising the tournament.

The owners of the Belfry had spent more than 20m on refurbishing the hotel and course for this event and if it had not been played at all I'm quite sure they would have been very unhappy.

The European tour and the PGA are also set to make between five and six million pounds each from the event and that would have been a huge loss if the tournament was cancelled altogether.

As it stands the event will be staged next year, and while some people may be disappointed now it is the most appropriate decision in the circumstances.
