Happier days: Woosnam and Byrne in tandem
Ian Woosnam's caddie has been sacked after failing to show up for an early tee-off time at the Scandinavian Masters in Malmo.

Miles Byrne angered the golfer last month after an extra club was stashed in Woosnam's bag for the final round of the 2001 Open.

The error led to the Welshman being handed a two-shot penalty, wrecking his hopes of Open glory and effectively cost more than 200,000 in prize money.

In Sweden, Woosnam was forced to find a replacement caddie and had to break into his own locker to get his golf shoes on Sunday.

He recovered from the setback to fire a three-under-par 69, but indicated that his patience with Byrne has now run out.

"You know what the circumstances are going to be this time," said Woosnam.

"I don't know where he is. I gave him a chance, I don't ask for much. He had one warning, that was it."

Woosnam showed tolerance when Byrne packed an extra driver at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

But he was never likely to forgive and forget in Malmo.

Late notice

Local caddie master Tommy Strand was used as a stand-in at three minutes notice and admitted that he was exhausted afterwards.

"Ian asked me to get another caddie, but there were none available so I took the bag," said Strand.

"I had no time for breakfast and only had a drink of water on the fourth tee.

"But I did count the clubs and Ian smiled. I saw what happened at The Open on television."
