Lane takes high road to Open

BBC Sport Online's Clive Lindsay reports from the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.

Englishmen Barry Lane and Greg Owen will be doing a Highland jig all the way to Lytham.

They went into the final day of the Scottish Open as two of the 43 golfers who had yet to qualify for The Open.

However Lane finished 12 under par, his final round 68 meaning he received a third-place cheque of 104,500.

Owen was five shots further back but, along with Lane, received an exemption for the biggest tournament of the year.

The Scottish Open is a happy hunting ground for Lane, having won it in 1988.

"Last time I played Lytham was after my maiden tour win in the Scottish Open, so I was a bit tender and shot something like 87-84," recalled the 40-year-old from Middlesex.

"Hopefully, I will do better this time. I hear it is soft and links golf suits me, so we'll see what happens.

Owen was only too delighted to start the hunt for accommodation in the Blackpool area instead of having a well-earned rest for his weary body and sore, bandaged wrist.

"I was going to have a week off, but now I have to try and find some digs," said the 29-year-old from Mansfield.

"My wife has been bashing me over the head recently telling me to start enjoying my golf again and that is what I have been doing."

"I will have played 10 or the last 11 weeks and it is getting me down.

"But I've played in the Open for the last two years and it is a fantastic experience.

"Playing the Majors is what it is all about."

He made the cut at St Andrews last year and hopes to do even better on his first visit to Lytham.

"Until this week, I have been playing nice stuff without getting anywhere, but there is still room for improvement," he said.

Ian Poulter finished equal eighth with fellow Englishman John Bickerton but missed out because of a poorer second round.
