![]() | Sunday, 15 July, 2001, 16:37 GMT 17:37 UK Goosen triumphs at Loch Lomond ![]() Goosen shows he is a Major contender next week South African Retief Goosen goes into next week's Open tournament fresh from victory at Loch Lomond. Goosen, golf newest Major champion, shot a comfortable 71 in the final round on Sunday to win the Scottish Open title by three shots. In a repeat his US Open win last month, the 32-year-old led the tournament from start to finish and added 366,660 to the 650,000 he collected in Tulsa. The South African's total of 16-under-par left him three ahead of Denmark's Thomas Bjorn. Australian Adam Scott, Ireland's Paul McGinley, England's Barry Lane and American John Daly were a stroke further back back in a four-way tie for third place.
No doubt, the win will put him in positive spirits for The Open, which starts on Thursday at Royal Lytham and St Annes. "It's great coming back after winning the US Open," he said. Goosen had begun the day with a three-shot lead, but stretched it to five after birdies at the second and sixth to reach 18 under. It allowed him the luxury of bogies on the last two holes, as he had done in his play-off with Mark Brooks at the US Open, which reduced the gap to three strokes once more. Back on form Crowd-puller John Daley may have failed in his bid for his first win since victory at St Andrews in 1995, but showed he is on the comeback trail. He closed with a 70 and tied for third, his highest finish for six years. Last month the American tied for fifth at the St Jude Classic on the PGA Tour, and has now had eight straight rounds - and 12 out of the last 13 - at par or better. "This has been a good week," said Daly, who finished at 272. "I had my chances, but I couldn't get anything going."
It cost him over 86,000 - and the equivalent number of Ryder Cup points. Barry Lane will be delighted with his performance which gave him his first top three finish for six years and one of 15 spots on offer for this week's Open championship. However the best round of the day belonged to British Amateur champion Michael Hoey of Ireland, who had a 7-under 64. Hoey had seven birdies to go out in 29, and played the back nine in even par for a remarkable turnaround from his only other European tour event.
