Andrew Oldcorn held his nerve to win the Volvo PGA championship at Wentworth by two strokes from Argentine Angel Cabrera.

Oldcorn completed a one-under-par final round of 71 to finish on 16-under.

But he had to withstand a strong challenge from Cabrera and Nick Faldo, who finished in third place on 13-under.

Faldo finished with a round of 67, after three birdies on the opening nine and two more on the back nine.

The highlight was a chip in from the bunker at the ninth, but he lost second place to Cabrera as the Argentine eagled the last.

The plaudits belonged to Oldcorn though.

"I never lost sight of the fact that some day I could win a championship like this," said Oldcorn. "This was the one I wanted to win on this tour for years and years.

"I first played on this course when I was about 14 years old and I fell in love with it then."

And he added: "I saw Nick (Faldo) was storming up the board and Michael (Campbell) was getting closer but it made me play better."

Oldcorn made a steady start with six consecutive pars, but then dropped strokes at the seventh and ninth and they looked like they could be costly as Faldo mounted his challenge.

But Oldcorn birdied the 12th to move back to 14-under, before Faldo set up a dramatic finish with his birdie at the 17th.

A poor chip shot at the last meant Faldo could only make a par and Oldcorn steadied his nerves with a birdie at the 17th.

And he added another birdie at the last to complete victory in style and claim the 330,330 first prize.

Sweden's Mathias Gronberg moved to 11-under-par as he went out in 31 and carded a 65 to race up the leaderboard and join Phillip Price and Michael Campbell on that mark.

Vijay Singh was also in great form as birdies at the 11th, 12th and 13th helped him to finish on ten-under-par.

England's Peter Baker completed a remarkable final round to finish on nine-under-par, and it could have been even better.

Baker, two-under overnight, raced to six-under with four birdies in the first six holes, but then dropped shots with a double-bogey at the eighth and a bogey at the ninth.

Three more birdies followed and despite a bogey at the 15th he ended with birdie, eagle and another birdie to move to nine-under-par with a final round of 65.
