The odd couple
Football's Morecambe and Wise: Sol Campbell and Steffen Freund
Following news that Arsenal's Sol Campbell has bought a house with Tottenham's Steffen Freund, BBC Sport Online's Chris Charles wonders how they'll get on.

Forget Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, the real Odd Couple have taken up residence in the Premiership.

When Sol Campbell and Steffen Freund aren't kicking lumps out of each other on the pitch, you will probably find them doing a spot of DIY on their house.

That's right, their house.

Fair enough, the pair were good mates when Campbell was at White Hart Lane, but an Arsenal and a Tottenham player buying a house together?

Morecambe & Wise
Original bedfellows - Morecambe & Wise

An Englishman and a German pruning their roses and doing the dishes?

Whatever next, Arsenal winning the Fair Play award?

The property in question is a five-bedroom Victorian house in London's Hampstead, worth a cool 3m.

The players see it as an investment, but you get the feeling there may be a few disagreements along the way.

Breakages

Decor for starters.

Sol will insist on some red and white Arsenal wallpaper, while Steffen would prefer the Tottenham club colours and crest.

Who knows, like those famous platonic housemates, Morecambe and Wise, they might share the same bed. But what colour would the duvet be?

You could foresee a few 'accidental' breakages in the kitchen while the other was out - an Arsenal mug here, a Spurs glass there, while in the bathroom, toothbrushes might be used to clean the toilet instead.

Then there's the washing. Can you imagine how the Tottenham fans would react to Freund running out in a pink top, after his flatmate had sneaked his shirt into the laundry basket?

But, as anyone who has ever shared a space with another will vouch, by far the biggest problems centre around the TV and hi-fi.

How's Freund going to feel when he gets in after a hard afternoon's training to see the Germany 1, England 5 video on - for the 17th day running?

Michael Owen
Oh no, not again Sol!

Equally, Campbell might not be too chuffed to see the painful re-runs of Euro 96 and Italia 90 or Arsenal's 3-1 FA Cup semi-final defeat by Spurs in '91.

Well actually, he might secretly enjoy the latter.

And if they ever had a dinner party, the stereo would be postively groaning after being forced to alternate between 'Good Old Arsenal' and 'Nice One Cyril'.

There's one guest, of course, who wouldn't mind in the slightest.

Since when has George Graham been proud?
