Clash of the Titans
BBC Sport Online puts bad boy of American sport Dennis Rodman head-to-head with his British counterpart Paul Gascoigne.

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman hit the headlines once again this week when he was charged for speeding in his boat "Sexual Chocolate".

Unsurprisingly, it is not the first time the recently retired basketball player has been in trouble.

His former Chicago Bulls team-mate Michael Jordan may be the more famous sportsman, but Rodman is the more notorious.

BBC Sport Online looks at whether British bad boy Paul Gascoigne can compete with the basketball player nicknamed "Worm".

Fame/notoriety

Certainly, Rodman, with his garish hair, tattoos and piercings, has it sewn up in America, having enjoyed success on the court and off.

He may have given up basketball, but he is still very much in the public eye.

He is on the A-list for showbiz parties, a regular for late-night talk shows and has even appeared in movies.

With only TV commercials for the aftershave Brut and Walkers Crisps to his name, it is hard for poor Gazza to compete in the Hollywood stakes.

But his drinking and kebab exploits with showbiz pals like Chris Evans and Danny Baker are legendary.

The tubby Geordie seems to have quietened down these days, but in Europe and Asia he can still draw a crowd.

Controversy

Rodman has had more problems than tattoos over the years, and is no stranger to life's vices, including women, drinking and gambling.

Worm seems to love a good brush with the law - his include a drink-driving offence last year as well as over 70 other confrontations with the police.

Gascoigne's problems tend to be more straightforward, involving drinking, women, drinking and drinking.

He did not win over any fans with his admission of domestic violence against wife Sheryl in the late 1990s.

But it was the late-night drinking binges that finally cost him his place in England's 1998 World Cup squad.

Also his "Pied Piper" gestures in the same year did not go down too well with fans at the Old Firm derby when he was at Glasgow Rangers.

Pop value

Who can forget Gazza's legendary singing debut with Lindisfarne on Fog On The Tyne, which reached number two in the charts?

His pop success cashed in on his football fame, but even his most devoted fans would have to admit that it hardly boosted his coolness.

And being mates with Rod Stewart is never going to help your street cred either.

On the other hand, Rodman has yet to launch a pop career, despite conquering the world of books, television and movies.

And no MTV awards ceremony is complete without an appearance by the 40-year-old.
Pop value: Rodman 9-6 Gazza

Excesses

Clearly Rodman likes to live life to the full and is showing no signs of letting up.

As well as being charged for speeding in his boat this week, he returns to court next month as a result of noise violations at his 40th birthday party.

Rodman certainly likes a bit to drink, too, having been totally sloshed when marrying Carmen Elecktra in 1998 in a Las Vegas ceremony - he was divorced six months later.

Gazza's problems with the bottle have been well-reported in the tabloids.

The Everton star seems to have calmed down quite a bit after sessions in various alcoholic clinics in recent years, but who can forget the "dentist's chair" drinking game he invented during England's pre-Euro 96 tour to Hong Kong?
Excesses: Rodman 7-9 Gazza

Talent

Of course, to be a true bad boy of sport, you need to have an actual talent for the game you play.

Rodman and Gascoigne have this in spades.

Worm has won five championships, two with the Detroit Pistons and three with the Chicago Bulls.

He was NBA Defensive Player of the Year twice, and led the league in rebounding for seven consecutive years despite standing only 6ft 8in.

As for Gazza, his football skills are legendary.

He has 57 in caps and was instrumental in England's reaching of the World Cup semi-finals in 1990.

While most remember him for the famous crying incident in Italy, his wonder-goal against Scotland during Euro 96 was one of the best goals of the decade.
Talent: Rodman 9-9 Gazza
