The generation game
Ali-Frazier - The next generation
BBC Sport Online's Mike Burnett takes a look at how the famous Ali-Frazier rivalry has just got a kiss of life nearly 30 years on, through the boxers' daughters.

"My Dad can beat up your dad," is a familiar cry in school playgrounds across the land.

But most kids don't get the chance to put the theory to the test.

Yet female boxers Jacqui Frazier-Lyde and Laila Ali can claim exactly that - and now in a bizarre twist of fate look set to stir up the old paternal animosities with their possible meeting in the ring.

Joe Frazier and Muhammed Ali clashed in the early 1970s in arguably three of the sport's greatest moments, with Ali claiming victory in the latter two.

Now boxing fans are eagerly waiting to see if their daughters will repeat the legendary clashes.

However, one cannot help wondering where it will all end.

Does this mean the boxing legends are going to be training up their grandchildren to continue the contest well into the 21st century?

Brooklyn and David Beckham
Can little Brooklyn sort out his dad's problems?
One can imagine the banners for the fight looking more like a movie title than a boxing match as "Ali v Frazier - The Next Generation" is plastered across billboards.

Of course, an even better draw for the crowd would be if they made it into a tag-team wrestling event where the father and daughter could pair-up.

Another idea is to get brothers, cousins, mothers and uncles involved, all taking part in a boxing league table between the two families.

There is also the question of whether this might catch on in other sporting feuds.

It is only a matter of time before one of Sebastian Coe's four children settles the running legend's current war of words with Linford Christie on the track.

Maybe in a few years time, little Brooklyn Beckham will seek retribution on the pitch against Diego Simeone's offspring for his father's emotional red card during France 98.

It seems fans will now have the chance to relive the sporting battles of yesteryear through the children of tomorrow.

The action might turn out not to be of the highest quality - but the idea seems certain to be a TV ratings winner.

The bids for the broadcasting rights are probably being prepared already.
