Lord Coe won 1500m gold at both the 1980 and 1984 Olympics

Lord Coe will officially open the Island Games in the Isle of Wight on Saturday 25 June.

The London 2012 chairman has supported the Games since 2006 when the Isle of Wight first bid to host the event.

Isle of Wight Island Games Association chairman David Ball says it is great to have the support of such a world-renowned figure.

"Lord Coe was very supportive when we were preparing the bid and his presence will be a tremendous boost," he said.

Lord Coe won four Olympic medals, including the 1,500 metres gold at the Olympic Games in 1980 and 1984, and set eight outdoor and three indoor world records in middle-distance track events.

The Games will see over 3,000 athletes and officials from over 24 islands around the world compete in 14 sports over six days.

The Isle of Man team will be one of the largest at the Games with 235 competitors taking part.
