The custom of tearing your clothes off and running around in nothing but a smile at a major sporting event may not be new but it has certainly been common in recent weeks. Five streakers were fined for baring all at The Open at St Andrews recently and then a similar number followed their lead during the Third day's play of the Third Test between England and the West Indies at Old Trafford. Streaking and sport have gone hand-in-hand for quite some time now. BBC Sport Online brings you a guide to ten of the most memorable streaks. April 1974 - Michael O'Brien at Twickenham
Twenty-five-year-old Australian Michael O'Brien set the trend rolling in 1974. O'Brien was the first known streaker at a major event and performed his antics during an England - France Rugby Union match at Twickenham. The picture of a policeman covering his 'assets' with his helmet has become a particularly famous image. August 1975 - Michael Angelow at Lords Michael Angelow took his life into his own hands when he ran across the scared Lords criket ground and straddled the stumps. Fortunately for Angelow he didn't come under the same attack as a fellow cricket streaker once did when Australian Greg Chappell chased after the naked invader and whacked him with his bat. January 1982 - Erica Roe at Twickenham Perhaps the most famous of all streaks was Erica Roe's 'bouncy' effort at an England - Australia Rugby Union match at Twickenham. Roe was accompanied on to the field by Sarah Bennett, but it was the 24-year-old bookshop assistant that caught the public's attention. She reportedly made 8,000 from television appearances following her 'five minutes of fame'.
July 1996 - Melissa Johnson at Wimbledon Twenty-three-year-old student Melissa Johnson stole the limelight at the Wimbledon men's singles final in 1996. As finalists Richard Krajicek and Malivai Washington posed for the customary pre-match pictures, Johnson grabbed the attention of many of the flashlights as she paraded in a miniature apron. July 1997 - Nikki Moffat - British Open at Royal Troon Tiger Woods fever hit The Open for the first time at Royal Troon in 1997 and Nikki Moffat paid tribute to the precocious young talent in her own special way. With Tiger stripes painted all over her body this was clearly a streak that had required meticulous planning.
1997 Snooker - Lianne Crofts at Benson & Hedges Masters Snooker got in on the streaking act in 1997 thanks to Lianne Crofts. As Steve Davis and Ronnie O'Sullivan battled it out for the Benson & Hedges title, Crofts descended upon the scene. Her intervention didn't affect Davis' ability to put the balls into pockets as he kept his concentration to win 10-8. Jan 2000 - Tracy Seargeant at The Indoor Bowls Championships Bowls may never have enjoyed the most exciting of images but there were few in the crowd at the Potters Leisure Resort in Norfolk that will have slept through Tracy Seargeant's sojourn on to the green earlier this year. "Bowls has a reputation as a boring game," said the 22-year-old Leisure Centre waitress. "So I thought I'd liven it up a bit. I was due to leave my job anyway so I had nothing to lose." Seargeant ran the length of the green before planting a kiss on world number one David Gourlay.
June 2000 - At the Vodafone Derby, Epsom Sinndar may have raced away with the Derby but not too far back down the Epsom home straight two naked men were putting in a late bid for a place. The duo burst out of the Public Enclosure and received a great ovation as they paced down the course, with one of them even diving over the finishing line. July 2000 - Mark Roberts at Wimbledon Mark Roberts is what is termed a professional streaker, who can list appearances on TV's 'This Morning' programme and at the 1996 Grand National among his previous streaks. But only last month he chose a Wimbledon doubles match featuring Anna Kournikova to perform his latest stunt. He even had the slogan 'only the balls should bounce' scrawled across his chest in reference to the bra advert featuring the Russian tennis player. July 2000 - Jacqui Salmond at The Open at St Andrews This year's Open seemingly became 'open season' for streakers and Jacqui Salmond was just one of them to hit the headlines. The mother-of-two who has worked as a lap dancer generated a bit of extra entertainment for the crowds who had seen Tiger Woods race away with the title as he avoided the rough. | See also: Other top SOL stories: Links to top Sport stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||
