Pound will remain on the CAS board

Italian lawyer Mino Auletta has been elected as the new president of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Auletta, who has been acting president since last year after the death of Keba Mbaye, beat former World Anti-Doping Agency chief Dick Pound to the post.

He will serve until 2010 after winning a majority of the 19 votes.

The other contenders for the role were Swiss lawyer Robert Briner and former International Swimming Federation secretary Gunnar Werner.

CAS is an independent institution which aims to settle sports-related disputes through arbitration or mediation and was created in 1984.

It has nearly 300 arbitrators from 87 countries, and deals with about 200 every year.
