Gerry Sutcliffe, MP for Bradford South, is set to replace Richard Caborn as the new sports minister. Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to make a formal announcement before the start of next week.
Sutcliffe, who has been a junior minister at the Department for Justice, is a Bradford Bulls, Bradford City and Manchester United fan.
The 54-year-old was elected MP for Bradford South in 1994 following the death of incumbent MP Bob Cryer.
Stints at the Treasury and Whips' office were followed by junior ministerial positions at the DTI and the Home Office.
Caborn was asked to step down as sports minister to front England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
