England's unconvincing Rugby World Cup quarter-final victory over Wales comes in for intense analysis in Monday's UK sports pages. | BACK PAGE HEADLINES Daily Mail: Count us out Daily Mirror: Stinker - Tackle on Pongo would have been a penalty at Old Trafford rages Houllier Daily Express: No chance Daily Star: Lamps: We can win it The Sun: What a pong The Independent: England's follies drive Woodward into fury The Guardian:Play like that again and we'll lose The Telegraph: Unsettled England send for Healey TheTimes: French World Cup guillotine hovers over fearful England |
As England continue to progress in Australia, the whole nation is asking why Clive Woodward's men are not doing so with more style.
But would a glorious defeat be better than a scrappy win? Just ask Wales for the answer!
We might not have long to find out if Woodward's warning becomes reality. The Guardian carries his prediction "Play like that again and we will lose".
The pre-tournament favourites will hold "clear the air talks" this week ahead of the semi-final against France.
If a chat doesn't seem much of a solution, how about the news, as reported by both The Mail and The Telegraph, that Woodward has called up Austin Healey to the squad?
Originally left out, he is now on standby for injury concerns Iain Balshaw and Josh Lewsey.
Who would have thought Healey might play the hero role? But then Mike Catt was not expected to play the part either, yet he made all the difference against Wales.
At this rate Will Carling might soon be stepping out of the commentary box and into the England XV.
In football, one man who seems set to make the reverse move - from pitch-side to pundit's chair - is Leeds boss Peter Reid.
"Reid axed" says The Sun, and various other papers agree.
The Daily Express reports that "Leeds see Paul Hart, the Nottingham Forest manager, as a likely successor".
Whatever or whoever it is that Leeds see, it is what the referee did not which concerns Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier.
"No penalty decision was a stinker" he is quoted as saying in The Sun, referring to Rio Ferdinand's challenge on Florent Sinama-Pongolle in the 2-1 defeat by Manchester United.
He rages in The Mirror that there was "no doubt it was a penalty" and he moans in The Mail that Liverpool are now capable of finishing only fourth in the Premiership.
That would be three places behind Chelsea, who are convinced they can go all the way.
In The Star Frank Lampard says "for the first time, we honestly believe we can win the title".
On the evidence of Sunday's 5-0 thrashing of Newcastle he may just have a point.
