The aeroplane - wheeling away with arms outstretched - is one of the finest celebrations in English football, and it has been put to good use after just one day of the new football season in Britain.

Most of the papers have big pictures of West Ham's new signing David Connolly celebrating in exactly that style dominating the front pages of their sports sections.

Connolly scored the winner as the relegated Hammers marked their first game in Division One with a 2-1 win at Preston, but the goal scorer was not happy that he was only a substitute.

He raged that he would leave if Hammers' boss Glenn Roeder did not pick him to start games, but Roeder was far from impressed.

On the day that Manchester United starlet Jimmy Davis was killed in a car crash and former Blackburn Rovers Ray Harford manager died of cancer Roeder told the Sunday Times: "Look what's happened today. Let's get in the real world here, shall we?"

The real world is not something that football can be accused of living in for very long and the tabloids have more tales of massive transfers on the way.

The Sunday People claims Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is planning to embark on a huge spending spree and is lining up four players.

The paper claims Ajax midfielder Rafael ver der Vaart, Brazilian Deco, West Ham's Jermain Defoe and Barcelona's Carles Puyol could all be on their way to Old Trafford.

Mid-market rivals the Sunday Express and Mail on Sunday both lead on Chelsea's signing of the "new Zola", Adrian Mutu, from Italian club Parma.

But it is not only players that are on the shopping list in football, according to the News of the World.

The red top claims that a major player is lining up a 650m bid for Premiership giants Manchester United.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Mirror reports that David Beckham is to be offered a 100m lifetime sponsorship deal by sportswear giants adidas

Away from the beautiful game, and Sunday Times rugby man Stephen Jones has been down to sunny Surrey to check out how the England team's preparation for the World Cup is coming on.

The competition kicks off in two month's time and judging from Jones' comments the England boys should be more than ready by the time they fly to Australia.

With their days starting in the gym at 0730 BST it is definitely not all fun and games for the squad, but they seem to be enjoying it.

Lawrence Dallaglio tells Jones: "This is the time of all our lives. It's glorious. I'm absolutely loving it. Loving it."

A sentiment Connolly would do well to take on board.
