The back pages
The top stories from the UK press
Monday's tabloids are in no doubt as to the biggest story of the day.

Gerard Houllier's branding of Blackburn defender Lucas Neill as a "coward" adorns the back pages of The Sun, the Daily Express, the Daily Mail and the Daily Star.

The Liverpool boss is fuming after Neill's two-footed tackle on Jamie Carragher left the Reds defender with a broken leg.

Milan Baros suffered a broken ankle in the same game, leaving Houllier to opine: "I would rather have lost the game than lose two players to serious injuries."

Houllier shares the headlines with fellow Frenchman Nicolas Anelka, who fired a second-half hat-trick for Manchester City in their 4-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Independent recalls a recent tabloid report in which Anelka's former girlfriend claimed the most exciting date the pair ever spent together was a visit to the local Tesco's.

"On the pitch he knows how to thrill," concludes the report.

The rumours of a takeover of Manchester United continue to rumble on.

Various papers report that Keith Harris, who brokered the deal which saw Roman Abramovich buy Chelsea, is standing by for the call that will reveal the proposed mystery buyer of the Old Trafford club.

Away from football, Michael Schumacher's first Grand Prix win since June comes in for widespread praise.

The Daily Telegraph hails the defending champion's "flawless exhibition of concentration and high-speed driving" at Monza.

And The Times reflects on Europe's landslide Solheim Cup win over America in Sweden.

Following the murder of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, the newspaper says the win briefly put a "smile back on the face of a nation that is bearing its sorrow with dignity".
