BOA chief executive Simon Clegg told BBC Five Live that London's proposal was on ice for at least a year, until after the Games in Manchester. "We are engaged in detailed discussion with Ken Livingstone and the GLA and the Government," he said. "But it would be sensible to wait and see what kind of success the Manchester games are going to be."
Clegg was speaking on the day that 850,000 tickets for the Commonwealths went on sale. He insisted that Manchester 2002 would be a success, despite fears that it will lose money - and thus possibly scupper London's Olympic hopes. No Commonwealth Games has ever made an operating profit. "Now that you have a significant level of Government investment, the problems that have been experienced over the past six months in terms of financial revenues have been resolved," he said. "There is a huge level of Government commitment and that will ensure the Games are a success. "I would encourage everyone to visit this fantastic celebration of sport." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top SOL stories: Links to more Sport stories are at the foot of the page. | |||
