English referee Howard Webb has been overlooked for the World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa.
Webb was one of 19 referees retained by Fifa after the group stages but has missed out on a last-eight game.
However, the Rotherham official could still referee a semi-final or the final following England's elimination.
Webb, 38, hopes to become the first Englishman to referee the final since 1974 when Jack Taylor oversaw West Germany's victory over the Netherlands.
Premier League referee Webb and his assistants Darren Cann and Mike Mullarkey have taken charge of three games in the World Cup so far.
The trio officiated in Spain's group game against Switzerland, Italy's group defeat by Slovakia and Brazil's win over Chile in the last 16.
Meanwhile, only one European referee has been given a quarter-final - Olegario Benquerenca of Portugal, who takes charge of Uruguay and Ghana in Johannesburg.
Ravshan Irmatov, from Uzbekistan, who refereed the opening game, will handle Argentina's game against Germany on Saturday.
