When Sir Stanley Matthews was invited to South Africa by a local businessman, the football legend saw it just as a way to supplement his £10 weekly wages.

But not for long. Matthews quickly developed a passion for nurturing the local footballers. He would return regularly for the next 25 years.

He coached a team dubbed Stan's Men and, in 1975, he took them to Brazil for a coaching trip. The players, most of whom had never left their Soweto township, trained in Rio and met Pele.

It was a trip that was about more than football - Matthews' work paved the way for development both on and off the field.

The "black man with the white face" - as one of his players affectionately described him - lives on in South Africa thanks to the work of the Sir Stanley Matthews Foundation.
