Uruguay striker Diego Forlan was delighted to see his side beat Mexico on Tuesday and qualify for the last 16 of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Importantly for Uruguay, their 1-0 victory over Mexico means they will likely avoid playing Argentina in the second round of the tournament.

"The important thing is that we qualified in first place," admitted Atletico Madrid star Forlan.

"They controlled the ball well and, in truth, it was quite hard for us."

Uruguay qualified with seven points, having also not conceded a goal in the group stage.

They had previously beaten South Africa 3-0 and drew 0-0 with France in the opening game of their campaign.

Mexico also qualified on goal difference, with South Africa going out despite their 2-1 victory over France.

But despite going through, Mexico's Rafael Marquez admitted his side were disappointed with how they played.

"It leaves a bitter taste," said the midfielder.

"We're all unhappy with this result and with today's performance. We'll have to improve now."

With both sides knowing that a point would guarantee their place in the last 16, the pair had been expected to play out a cautious draw.

However, the opening exchanges were lively with both sides creating chances.

Andres Guardado hit the crossbar for Mexico but it was Luis Suarez's header just before half-time that won it for Uruguay.

And Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez admitted he had been "bothered" by talk before the game that the two teams might play for a draw.

"It's an insult to the coaches and players. Both teams came out looking for something," he insisted.

On his side's performance, Tabarez added: "We had bad moments, but also good moments. I think it was a lack of experience."
