World Cup 2010: Group stage permutations

Jermain Defoe

Highlights - Slovenia 0-1 England

The Netherlands and Brazil were the only teams guaranteed a place in the last 16 of the World Cup after the first two rounds of group games were completed.

Here is how the final round of matches panned out at the 2010 World Cup.

Group A: Uruguay qualified as group winners and Mexico joined them in the last 16 as runners up, finishing above hosts South Africa on goal difference.

Group B: Diego Maradona's Argentina safely booked their place in the next stage as group winners by beating Greece, who missed out on the runners up spot to South Korea. Argentina will play Mexico, while South Korea meet Uruguay.

Group C: An injury-time winner for theUnited States against Algeria meant they narrowly edged top spot on goals scored. This eliminated the Desert Foxes as well as Slovenia, who were beaten 1-0 by group runners-up England.

Group D: Germany claimed top spot in the group and set up a last-16 clash with England courtesy of their 1-0 win over Ghana, who took second place on goal difference after Australia beat Serbia 2-1. The Africans face the United States in the first knockout round.

Group E: The Netherlands were already through and maintained their 100% record with a 2-1 victory over already-eliminated Cameroon. Japan eased to a 3-1 win over Denmark in a winner-takes-all game in Rustenburg.

Group F: Paraguay will play Japan in the first knockout round after achieving the draw they needed against New Zealand and winning the group. They are joined in the last 16 by Slovakia, who shocked reigning World Champions Italy 3-2 to sensationally put the Azzurri out and set up a match against the Netherlands

Group G: Brazil, who were already in the last 16, secured top spot with a 0-0 draw against Portugal - which was enough to seal the latter's qualification. Ivory Coast's 3-0 win over North Korea was ultimately meaningless, although it was the Elephants' only win at World Cup 2010 and ensured that the North Koreans finished without a point.

Group H: Spain beat Chile 2-1 in the final match, but both teams progressed courtesy of a 0-0 draw between Switzerland and Honduras in the other final match.
