Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda bowed to the "superior team" after a 2-0 defeat by Spain all but eliminated the South American side from the World Cup.

David Villa scored twice but missed a penalty as pre-tournament favourites Spain wasted several clear-cut chances.

And Rueda said: "There's nothing much to explain except that we had a superior team in front of us."

Honduras must now beat Switzerland and hope Spain lose heavily to Chile to have any chance of making the last 16.

Villa scored a stunning solo effort after 17 minutes, beating three defenders before firing past Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares.

And the finish by the Barcelona striker appeared to knock the wind out of the Honduras players at Ellis Park.

Rueda explained: "They surprised us with that goal, that individual move by David Villa very early on and I think we lacked conviction in our play to try to offset and overcome this rival."

Honduras captain Amado Guevara echoed the comments made by his coach.

"There's no great analysis needed," said Guevara.

"We knew there was no tomorrow, that it was a must-win match.

"Now we need to keep working and move forward."
