Galekovic has been capped four times by Australia |
Australia have called up goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic after it was confirmed Brad Jones will not return to the World Cup due to a family illness. Reserve keeper Jones, who plays for Middlesbrough, was allowed to return home last week because his son Luca, 4, has been diagnosed with leukaemia. And Fifa has given the Socceroos the all-clear to draft in Galekovic. The Adelaide United player has been training in South Africa despite not being part of the official squad. First-choice Mark Schwarzer of Fulham and Reading's Adam Federici complete coach Pim Verbeek's goalkeeping options. | WORLD CUP PHOTO ALBUM |
The Aussies begin their Group D campaign against Germany on Sunday in Durban before games against Ghana (19 June) and Serbia (23 June). Midfielder Carl Valeri, who plays for Italian Serie B side Sassuolo, said his team will treat their opener against the Germans like a "final". "It's a tough group, but the Germans are the toughest," said the 25-year-old.
