Cecefa head on lack of teams

Only once have a nation from East Africa qualified for the World Cup, and that was Zaire's record-breaking horror campaign in 1974.

According to Nicholas Musonye, head of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA), it will still be many years until the next.

"It may take time. Ten, 15 years. World Cup is a serious business. You have really to prepare your boys."

He blames lack of investment and structure for the slow progress of his region's football.

"In Kenya we only have two grounds - and they are not even the standard required to play serious football."

In comparison, there are five teams from West Africa in the finals - as well as the hosts, South Africa.

With the right investment from the region's governments, Mr Musonye hopes East Africa can be represented once again in the future.

""It is going to be very difficult, but it is not impossible."

In a special edition of World Football, Peter Musembi travels through Kenya, Ethiopia and DR Congo. Listen to the programme here.
